Last night’s announcement of a £1.57bn support package for the arts is a really positive step and we as an industry are indebted to DCMS, UK Theatre and everyone who has lobbied for the arts in the past weeks.
Not only does the arts contribute over £10bn to the UK economy, experiencing and participating in art and creativity is so beneficial for wellbeing and will continue to be more important than ever in these times.
Whilst our stage may be dark and our workshop spaces empty, our work has never stopped. The Coliseum continues to serve the communities of Oldham and Greater Manchester, reaching out and engaging with participants of all ages and producing and sharing great art and opportunities to be creative both online and via socially distanced distribution of physical resources.
We’re eager to see the details around the arts support package and the phased return of live performance so that we can safely welcome our audiences back. Whilst we celebrate today we must ensure that this support reaches all communities including those who are underrepresented, those most at risk, and the artists and freelancers with whom we work, and use this time to create lasting positive change.
